How to Take a Passport Photo With Your Android Phone

You do not need an iPhone to take a perfect passport photo. Modern Android phones have excellent cameras. Here is how to get a compliant photo using any Android phone.

1. Use the Rear Camera

The rear camera on your Android phone has a much better sensor than the front-facing selfie camera. Use the main rear camera at 1× zoom for the best quality. Do not use portrait mode, beauty filters, or wide-angle mode — these distort facial proportions.

2. Camera Settings

Set your camera app to the highest quality: 4:3 aspect ratio at maximum resolution. Turn off HDR (can create unnatural shadows). Turn off beauty mode, skin smoothing, and face slimming (common on Samsung, Xiaomi, and Huawei phones). Turn off the flash — use natural light instead.

3. Timer or Voice Control

Use the camera timer (3-5 seconds) or voice control ("cheese" / "smile" / "capture") to take the photo without touching the phone. This eliminates camera shake. Prop your phone on a stable surface at eye level, 1-1.5 metres away.

4. Samsung-Specific Tips

Samsung phones have Scene Optimiser — turn it off in Camera Settings. Turn off Beauty Face in the face icon at the top. Use the 12MP main lens (not the 108MP mode which creates excessively large files).

5. Google Pixel Tips

Pixel phones: turn off Face Retouching in Camera Settings. Use Night Sight only if lighting is poor (it reduces noise). The Pixel's computational photography is excellent for passport photos — just make sure beauty filters are off.
