Digital Passport Photo Guide — UK Online Application Requirements

The UK has moved passport applications online. Here is everything you need to know about digital passport photos — the format, specifications, and submission requirements that are different from printed photos.

Why Digital?

HM Passport Office now processes the large majority of UK applications entirely online, which means most applicants never need to print a photo at all — you upload a JPEG file during the application and the physical print becomes optional. Digital is faster (no postal delay), cheaper (no printing or pharmacy visit), and easier to retake if something is wrong. The catch is that the digital specifications are slightly different from the old printed-photo rules: file format, pixel dimensions, and file size matter in ways they did not for a physical print, and getting one of them wrong is enough to have the upload rejected by the online system.

Digital Photo Specifications

Size: At least 900 pixels wide × 1200 pixels tall — the digital equivalent of the 35 × 45 mm print — and the 3:4 aspect ratio must be preserved, so simply upscaling a smaller image does not work. Minimum file size 50 KB, maximum 10 MB.

Format: JPEG only. PNG, HEIC, and WebP are all rejected by the online system, so convert before uploading; HaaFoto outputs a compliant JPEG automatically.

Colour: Full colour only — no black and white or sepia — in the sRGB colour space, and as lightly compressed as possible.

Resolution: At least 300 DPI. Our AI encodes at 300 DPI using mozjpeg quality 92, which balances file size and detail.

Taking a Digital Photo

The shooting rules for a digital photo are the same as for a print: light grey or cream background, neutral expression, no glasses, even lighting, and a plain wall behind you. The one real difference is that a digital photo is more forgiving — minor background imperfections or framing issues can be corrected by AI before you upload, whereas a printed photo is fixed the moment it leaves the printer. Background removal and automatic cropping are explicitly permitted for UK digital photos, which is why an AI-processed digital upload is often cleaner and more compliant than a photo-booth print, because the final file can be checked against every digital specification before it is ever submitted.

Upload Process

HM Passport Office's online application includes a basic photo checker, but it only verifies three things: minimum resolution, file format, and approximate head size. It does not check background colour accuracy, shadows, lighting evenness, hair coverage across the eyes, facial expression, or glasses glare — and these are exactly the issues that get a photo rejected after submission. That gap is why it is worth validating independently first: running the file through a tool that checks all of these before you commit to it avoids the back-and-forth of having a submission bounced days later. Catching these problems before you submit means your application keeps moving instead of stalling while you retake and re-upload the photo.

Digital vs Printed

Digital and printed passport photos follow different rules. The table below sets out the practical differences for a UK application. Digital is the default for online applications; printed photos are only needed for the paper route.

Other Countries’ Digital Requirements

Digital specifications vary by country. The table lists the requirements for common destinations that accept an online photo upload, all sourced from official specifications.

Get Your Digital Photo Now

Upload any photo and our AI crops it to the exact digital specification for your country, validates it against every requirement, and returns a compliant JPEG ready to upload — from £2.99 with instant delivery. Because the processing only adjusts framing and background and never alters your facial features, the result passes the HM Passport Office upload checker on the first attempt. If you also want a printed copy, the same file can be laid out onto a standard 4 × 6 inch sheet for printing at home or at a pharmacy. That gives you a single, validated file that works for both the online application and any physical copy you need.
