Digital Passport Photo Guide — UK Online Application Requirements

The UK has moved passport applications online. Here is everything you need to know about digital passport photos — the format, specifications, and submission requirements that are different from printed photos.

Why Digital?

HM Passport Office now processes over 80% of applications online. Digital photos are faster, cheaper, and easier than printed photos. You upload a photo file rather than mailing physical prints. The requirements are slightly different from printed photos — here is what matters.

Digital Photo Specifications

Size: At least 900 pixels wide × 1200 pixels tall (35×45mm equivalent). Larger is fine, but aspect ratio must remain 3:4. Minimum file size: 50KB. Maximum file size: 10MB.

Format: JPEG only. No PNG, HEIC, or WebP — convert before uploading. HaaFoto automatically converts to compliant JPEG at 300 DPI.

Colour: Colour photo only. No black and white, no sepia. sRGB colour space. Uncompressed or minimally compressed.

Taking a Digital Photo

Same rules as printed photos: correct background, neutral expression, no glasses, even lighting. But digital photos are more forgiving — minor issues can be corrected by AI processing before submission. Background removal and cropping are permitted for digital photos (unlike printed photos where some countries prohibit digital manipulation).

Upload Process

HM Passport Office's online system includes a basic photo checker, but it is limited. It checks: minimum resolution, file format, and approximate head size. It does NOT check: background colour accuracy, shadows, lighting evenness, hair coverage, expression, or glasses glare. That is why independent validation is recommended before submitting.

Digital vs Printed

New Zealand: Digital photo for online application. 35×45mm (900×1200 px). JPEG. 50KB-10MB.
