Passport Photo Rules: Glasses, Hijab, Beard, Makeup & Head Coverings

What you wear in your passport photo matters. Different countries have specific rules about glasses, religious headwear, facial hair, and makeup. Here is what is allowed — and what will get your photo rejected.

Glasses: Banned (Most Countries)

The UK, US, EU Schengen countries, Canada, and Australia all require glasses to be removed. This rule was introduced to reduce biometric matching failures caused by reflections and frame obstruction. If you have a medical condition requiring glasses, you need a signed doctor's note (UK) or medical certificate (US). Even with a note, frames must not cover the eyes and there must be zero glare.

Hijab & Religious Head Coverings

Head coverings worn for religious purposes (hijab, turban, kippah, veil) are permitted in the UK, US, and EU — but with conditions. The full face must be visible from chin to hairline. The covering must be a single colour, contrasting with the background. It must not cast shadows on the face. The US additionally requires a signed statement that the covering is worn daily for religious reasons.

Beards & Facial Hair

Beards and moustaches are generally permitted. If you normally have a beard, keep it for the photo — do not shave just for the passport. The photo must represent your current appearance. If you have a full beard that covers the jawline, this is acceptable as long as your eyes, nose, and mouth remain fully visible.

Makeup

Everyday makeup is generally permitted in all countries. The key rule: makeup must not alter your natural appearance. Avoid: heavy contouring, dramatic eyeliner that changes eye shape, coloured contact lenses, false eyelashes that obscure eyes, excessive highlighter that creates glare. The photo must look like you at a border checkpoint.

What to Wear

Wear everyday clothes in a darker colour that contrasts with the background. Avoid white tops (blend with background), uniforms or camouflage (some countries ban), patterns and logos (may interfere with biometric reading), and low-cut tops (photo only shows head and shoulders). A simple dark shirt, blouse, or jumper works perfectly.
